Formative Albums 2:

Criteria:

Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor described this album as "express[ing] a kind of vulnerability - the idea that I was a person trying to keep my head above water, living in this machine which was moving forward." And uh, that's how I feel listening to it, as someone who is trying to keep my head above water. It's kind of got more new wave to it than their other stuff, which sucks me in. Favourite song: Sin or Terrible Lie

Violator by Depeche Mode

I discovered this album when my voice changed, kind of through karaoke, because I could FINALLY emulate Dave Gahan's deep, kind of dreary voice. I'd liked Depeche Mode since I was a young kid (my mom was MTV generation), from what I remember, but being able to sing along was a game changer. Favourite song: I'm basic, it's Enjoy The Silence

Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token

My first exposure to ST was, like many, a tiktok edit of some tumblr sexyman... yanno. You catch my drift. But I actually ended up checking out the band and now they're one of my favourites ever. Just like. The sweeping vocals? The pianos? The fact there's a whole ballroom jazz-like number? Favourite song: Aqua Regia and Vore

Two (EP) by Sleep Token

Two was the second thing I listened to by ST. It kind of coincided with a lot of weird situations in my life coming together, not the least of which being getting serious about theistic Satanism and practice in general. I was researching the Apocrypha around this time. Favourite song: Nazareth

Sundowning by Sleep Token

Ah... theme music for the depression. LMFAO. Well... that's not untrue. I listen to this album a lot when I'm writing. There are several songs on OC playlists, too. I really enjoy the juxtaposition of anger and longing. I like the pining. The breakdowns on this album are fucking awesome, also, in my opinion. Favourite song: Give and Gods

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac

The lore behind this album (as well as the actual music) is really what makes it so good, and timeless. It makes me less afraid to be seen as "messy" because clearly, you can be that in an extremely public way and someone will still love you. Favourite song: You Make Lovin' Fun and Silver Springs

.Stomachaches. by frnkiero andthe cellabration.

When I get kind of... twisted up about life, it hits my gut first, for sure. I really enjoy how kind of "unpolished" this album is, as in not overproduced. If it was overproduced, it really doesn't sound like it to me. It's like "great, I can still be depressed in my 30s even when good things happen sporadically." The 'Weighted' m/v also has a big "the Goonies, if it were set in NJ" vibe to it, for me. Favourite song: stitches

Recipe For Hate by Bad Religion

I dunno what I can say about Bad Religion that I haven't already said, or hasn't already been said. I think out of this one and Stranger Than Fiction, STF feels more cynical and 'mature,' but this is the first (and currently only) Bad Religion vinyl I have. It just... hits different. It helps me look back and remember why I was a punk in the first place. Favourite song: Don't Pray on Me

Particles (EP) by M|O|O|N

I listened to M|O|O|N a lot when I first moved to [insert large city in my area here], and when I first got a job in art production. In university, it (and others by M|O|O|N) were what helped me concentrate the best during 14-hour studio nights. Favourite song: Plus Four

Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin

Hot take: this was the last good Zeppelin album and that doesn't count Houses of the Holy. I said it, bitch. I don't have much to say besides this album feels to me like the end of a years-long drug bender. No comment besides that, legally. Favourite song: In The Light

Boston by Boston

Foreplay/Long Time was the first song I heard on the radio the day I turned 18. Uhh, so I have this odd little ritual of listening to the entire album every year on my birthday because it is a reminder that yes, I made it to 18. I made it through transitioning, I made it through another year and beyond. If I don't hear the opening chords of 'More Than A Feeling' at some point on my birthday, it doesn't feel like my birthday yet. Favourite song: all of them, the only one I don't like as much is Something About You (and even then... yanno)
